Pumpkins!

Orange Sunshine

Over at Gardening Gone Wild they are having another Picture This competition. It has been my first year of having a veg plot and pretty much most of it has been harvested already, although I did enter some of the veggies in the Emsworth Village Show back in August. So when I saw that this months theme for the picture contest was "Abundant Harvest " I was a little dissapointed. But not for long! I have been keeping my eyes peeled for something that would fit Saxon's criteria and this week I spotted just the thing at one of my local farm shops. Pumpkins! Lots of pumpkins! They really have had a bumper harvest of pumpkins this year.

Bumper harvest of pumpkins.

I am a total beginner as regards to photography, although you can see from this blog that I really do love taking photo's. Earlier this year I recieved the rather lovely gift of a second hand Cannon DSLR camera. Since then I have gotten the bug. I now can't walk around a garden without itching to take a photo, infact I get positively twitchy if I can't. I love it because it provides me with a wonderful record of the flowers I have grown and gardens I have visited. I'm not very good with the technical side of it, although I keep trying to tell myself I am going to learn more. At the moment I just enjoy the spontaneity of wandering around with a camera and snapping things that make me smile.

I have chosen to enter "Orange Sunshine" in this months contest as for me it says October and bountiful harvest. It was taken on a very crisp, gloriously sunny autumn morning and I just loved the contrast of the blue sky against the warm orange of the pumpkins. If you click on the picture to enlarge it you will see that the moon was still out and sits just above the pumpkins in the middle of the picture.
I enjoyed them anyway, I hope you do too!

Well, I'd never have thought you're a beginner, so your instinct's spot on.

James-AS also mentioned orange and blue being a winning combination in his talk yesterday, so here's hoping it does the same for you.

These are great photos. I love the Orange Sunshine and the last one. Pumpkins are one of the few orange things I like :)

Thank you for your comments, they mean a lot to me. I've always enjoyed archaeology because I have had an eye for spotting things others often miss so perhaps it is helping me with my phototgraphy too :o)

VP I do hope James is right. I've had Salvia patens 'Guanajuato' with Salvia 'orangy pink' growing through it this summer and thought it was a rather fun combination. I also spotted a very pretty orangy potentilla growing through some of the Salvia's in Derry's "blue bed" over at Special Plants last month.

RO :o)

What a wonderful time you are having with that new camera and taking some very good photographs. I love your subject , pumpkins- they are so sunny. I never remember seeing a pumpkin when I was growing up on the Fylde coast. Maybe it was just too wet to grow them there. Good luck in this month's competition.

RO: What a lovely shot! Equipment and technical know how may be one thing, but you've clearly got a good eye and I think that is something nearly impossible to teach. I'll throw in my own vote for that color combination - orange and blue - it just sings. I especially like looking at the enlarged shot with that moon hanging in the sky. Absolutely great. Good luck to you in the contest and thanks for visiting Gardenista!

Hi RO.
Great shot, and great composition. Really liked the colors, these crisp autumn days are the best, and you captured it well.

Good luck in the competition.

Wonderful colours, RO.

Oh I would vote for that to be a winner for sure! Orange sunshine is the perfect title as well. Your Stilton and spawn are gorgeous felines, my Hazel and Kitty say Meow to them. :-)

Such great photos and what a wonderful gift you received. Nothing says Abundant Harvest this time of year like pumpkins. Again, great photos.

It is and I thought of you when I was there as the Farm Shop has the initials VP!
