Hi Kate,

Tumbledown Farm is an organic smallholding in a very remote part of rural Lincolnshire. We are very lucky to have large numbers of ladybirds living here naturally. So no need to set them loose in the garden -luckily they organise that all by themselves. I love finding them all over the place and spotting where they have decided to overwinter at the end of the summer. They do a great job of munching their way through all the pesky aphids. I think they have to be right up there as some of my favourite garden visitors.

Love the title of your post. I wholeheartedly agree. Do you set ladybugs loose in your gardens? I do that every summer. I'm not sure if it does any good but I sure love to see them creeping about the flowers.

Hi Gardenlife,

We have lots of ladybirds here but I had not noticed a preference for fennel. I have some lovely bronze fennel in the veg plot but I have never found any ladybirds in it. Today they all seemed to be down in the meadow on the cow parsley.

Macro lenses are great for picking up the detail, although ladybirds are tricky customers to photograph as they are such fast movers!

Hi RO, have you noticed how ladybirds are particularly attracted to fennel?!
My class of 8 yr olds and I did a ladybird survey last week, great excitement ensued as we hunted and counted spots..unfortunately I couldn't get the close up pics I wanted without a super duper macro lense!

It is only natural, but never nice. Stilton having been a house cat for the first five years of his life is not really a very great hunter. He manages to pull the odd leg off a spider, make machine gun noises at the birdies and play with Silvi's dead mole's but that is about the sum of his killing prowess!

I've taken lots of pics of my beautiful boy today so hopefully a post on whats happening at Tumbledown will be following shortly. We've been bathing the billy goats this afternoon, oh god do I stink!!! Time for my bath I think ;)

Love the ladybug picture. I just bought a macro lens, but haven't played with it too much. We've been having record rain and photographing in the wet isn't much fun.
How is Stilton doing? My siamese, Foos, has been a BAD boy and so has to spend more time in the house now instead of outside playing. He got into a nest of baby birds at our neighbor's house and killed them. Natural for a cat, but the neighbor was heartbroken and a bit angry.

Rosey, Yes ladybirds rock and yes I used a macro lens for this!

Thanks for the comments, Stilton and I had the best morning in the hay meadow. Just us, the sun and the sound of the birds singing. I was really chuffed to spot this little chap running up a cow parsley stem but it was quite difficult photographing him with a cat sat on my lap and refusing to move!
